Canyon County voters waited hours Tuesday as turnout caught the clerk's office off guard

12:20 a.m.when the last Canyon County voter cast a ballot

By state law, voters can't enter the line after 8 p.m.

If you stood in line Tuesday night, you weren't alone. One of the last Canyon County ballots was cast just after midnight, Steve Cushman said, and voters waited hours.

Canyon County counted 79,036 ballots, or 66% of registered voters. Steve Cushman, the county's director of constituent services, said Election Day turnout left the clerk's office "a little bit off guard."

Cushman pointed to fewer polling places than before 2020, and said the length of the ballot also played a part. and hand-marked ballots, which take longer to print and count, played a part too, Cushman said.

  • Polling places: 51 this year, about 64 before 2020
  • Registered voters in Canyon County: 119,764
  • Same-day registrations: 6,730 as of Thursday, expected to rise
  • Statewide turnout: 731,980 voters, a midterm record

The Wrap

The Meridian Symphony Orchestra is playing "The American Spirit" this weekend to mark America's 250th, with works by Aaron Copland and Howard Hanson. Copland's "A Lincoln Portrait" brings Lincoln's words to the stage, including excerpts from the Gettysburg Address. It's also new Artistic Director Craig Purdy's first official performance. Quite the debut.
